Critical Issues in the Conservation Biology of Northwest Russia Discussed in Vologda.

A workshop on “Critical Issues in the Conservation Biology of Northwest Russia” was held in Vologda on December 2–3. The workshop was organized by the Association of Conservation NGOs of Northwest Russia, the Vologda regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, and the Karelia Regional Nature Conservancy SPOK. The participants presented conservation biology (CB) problems that require scientific study in order to be resolved and identified and prioritized critical research areas and specific CB issues. They selected the areas of CB research for the next 1–3 years and created a framework for cooperation between the environmental and scientific communities. Workshop speakers included Aleksei Yaroshenko (Greenpeace Russia), Aleksandr Markovsky (SPOK), Dmitriy Aksenov (Transparent World), Mikhail Karpachevsky (Wildlife Conservation Center TsOPD), Tatyana Yanitskaya (World Wide Fund for Nature WWF), Olga Smirnova (RAS Center for Ecological Problems and Forest Productivity), Nadezhda Maksutova (Vologda Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society VRO RGO), and Natalya Bolotova (Vologda Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society VRO RGO).
