OOO Medvezhegorsky LPKh Fined 300,000 Rubles for Destruction of Red Book Species

The Administration of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for the Supervision of Natural Resources) for the Republic of Karelia has fined OOO Medvezhegorsky LPKh 300,000 rubles for the destruction of Red Book species while logging in the area of a planned nature park on the Zaonezhsky Peninsula. The fine was based on an investigation into the logging company that was initiated by the Karelian conservation prosecutor under KoAP RF [Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation] Article 8.35 (destruction of rare plants listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation). “During commercial operations, the forest development company did not undertake all measures within its power to comply with conservation law, and it allowed the illegal destruction of rare plant life, which is in violation of legal requirements, the terms and conditions of its lease, and of forest development plan regulations,” the prosecutor noted.

The logging company was given the minimum punishment prescribed by the Administrative Offenses Code. KoAP Article 8.35 (Destruction of Rare and Endangered Species of Animals or Plants) proposes a punitive fine for legal entities of between 300,000 and 500,000 rubles along with the confiscation of equipment for capturing animals or extracting plants.
