Suspension of FSC certificate validity at Segezhsky paper and pulp mill

Since the 27th of November, the Audit Company NEPCon decided to suspend the validity of the sertificate of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for the forest management and delivery chain, which were issued to OJSC Segezhsky paper and pulp mill, included into the timber holding Investlesprom. The reason for such a decision were violations of the demands of the Forest Stewardship Council for sustainable forest management, identified by both conservationists and auditors alike.

In the present year, members of the Karelian nature conservation organization SPOK discovered a number of violations of the forest and environmental law in forest areas that are in the lease of the Segezhsky paper and pulp mill and other companies in the holding of Investlesprom that supply the mill with timber. Furthermore, over the past few years there have been uncovered many illegal cuttings in the lease of Segezhsky paper and pulp mill, and the tenant still has not taken effective measures to stop them, which was confirmed during an unplanned audit of forest management of the company.

“The decision of the audit company to suspend the FSC-certification was a natural reaction to the systematic violations of the Forest Stewardship Council criteria and standards by the Segezhsky paper and pulp mill. All this is evidence of the collapse in the system of the forest management in the Investlesprom holding in Karelia “, – said the head of the SPOK, Aleksander Markovsky.
