Forest Reserve Leaseholders in Zaonezhe Urged to Refrain from Logging Intact Forests.

The Karelia Regional Nature Conservancy SPOK has sent an appeal to several timber companies to exclude intact forests from logging. The companies include OOO Medvezhegorsky LPKh, OOO Evrolesprom, OOO Pyalmsky Lesopilny Zavod, OOO Agrovodsnab, and OAO LKhK Karellesprom, which are leasing forest reserve tracts on the Zaonezhsky Peninsula. They also asked those leaseholders that adhere to ecologically responsible and sustainable forest management practices in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Principles and Criteria to exclude all types of High Conservation Value Forests from logging. ROO SPOK reminded the timber companies that the regional land use plan proposes the creation of the Zaonezhsky Nature Park and the Zaonezhsky Scenic Reserve. The planned areas include natural ecosystems untouched by human activities, and they also contain a concentration of species listed in the Red Book of Karelia and the Red Book of Russia. Moreover, the Zaonezhsky Peninsula contains a large number of tourist areas and places of cultural importance.

The ecologists pointed out that according to FSC Principles and Criteria, the planned Specially Protected Natural Areas are High Conservation Value Forests, and timber cannot be harvested from them or sold to companies holding FSC Forest Management or Chain-of-custody Certificates. ROO SPOK added schematic maps of forest reserve leaseholders on the Zaonezhsky Peninsula to their appeal and identified valuable natural resources and places of cultural importance.
